Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions homeowners ask us most.

How do I know whether to repair or replace my furnace?

Frequent repairs, uneven heating, unusual noise, rising energy use and difficulty maintaining temperature may justify a replacement assessment. Age alone does not determine the answer. A qualified HVAC contractor should inspect the equipment, identify the fault, estimate repair cost and compare that option with the expected service life and benefits of a new system.

What furnace size do I need?

Furnace capacity should be based on the home's heating load, not simply the size of the existing unit. A contractor should consider floor area, insulation, windows, air leakage, orientation, ductwork and local design temperatures. Oversized equipment can short-cycle; undersized equipment may struggle during cold weather.

What does high efficiency mean?

Gas furnace efficiency is commonly expressed as annual fuel utilization efficiency, or AFUE. A higher rating indicates that more of the fuel is converted into usable heat under standardized conditions. Real-world operating cost also depends on the home, installation, controls, maintenance and usage.

Is maintenance still required with coverage?

Yes. Filters, vents and the furnace require regular care. Follow manufacturer and agreement requirements, arrange professional maintenance as recommended, and keep records. Maintenance items and damage caused by neglect are not necessarily covered.

Can I use my own contractor?

You may be able to work with your existing contractor if they are, or become, an approved Vista Services dealer. If you do not have a contractor, Vista Services can help identify a participating dealer where service is available.
